Yemen Fighting Threatens Water Access for Millions in Taiz—UN
UNICEF Representative in Yemen Akhil Iyer told journalists in Geneva that water infrastructure supplying approximately 3 million people, including at least 1.6 million children, was under threat as fighting interfered with vital supply routes.
"Diesel shortages threaten to bring water pumps to a halt, while the cost of trucked water has tripled since this latest escalation," Iyer said.
He also reported that over 168,000 children had undergone malnutrition screening in Taiz since the beginning of the year, with more than 52,000 identified as suffering from acute malnutrition. This represents almost one-third of those examined.
"For children in Taiz, hunger, unsafe water and disease are becoming an increasingly dangerous combination," he warned.
Meanwhile, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesperson Matthew Saltmarsh said the number of displaced people across Yemen had surpassed 250,000 as of Oct. 17, compared with approximately 213,000 recorded in earlier figures.
Taiz represented 76% of recorded departures and received 52% of people newly forced from their homes, Saltmarsh told reporters in Geneva.
UNHCR reported that displaced families most frequently required emergency shelter, followed by food supplies and financial assistance.
The agency said it had evaluated 12,283 displaced households in Abyan, Aden, Marib, Lahj and Taiz, identifying approximately 2,050 households that lacked shelter.
